Since this forum is anonymous I expect answers to be brutally truthful. So what do you think about African Americans who straighten their hair or wear straight wigs? Do you think its cool or silly?

I think you are a person, and that is what really matters.

I do not think that wearing a wig or straightening your hair looks silly if you want to do it - any more than I think curling mine would look silly. (well, ok, so I have a kinda round face, so maybe it would)

Be happy with who you are, and know that you are loved for who you are. If you want to straighten your hair, do it. If you want to have an Afro, do it. If you want to shave your head, do it. First and foremost though, believe in yourself.

i think it is necessary. embrace what god gave you. i don't consider African American hair to be NAPPY, it's just the way it is.

it all depends on your kind of face and stuff, but personally I like afros in girls, but no matter what you do, dont dye it blonde! a black girl with blonde girl always looks crappy

I think you should stick with your natural hair no matter what it is. Or go get a proffesional opinion. Only straighten it if you are a girl...since I'm not sure.

i think wigs are silly unless there is something really wrong with your hair (like you have none or a disaster happened to it). however straightening your hair often turns out looking pretty good so there is nothing wrong with that. it really doesn't matter what we think though, its what you think.

I like dreads, cornrows, and shaved heads. You could have a jerrycurl if you feel like it. As far as straightening goes, though I am not Black, I would say that it is damaging and full of chemicals that may burn the scalp and skin. Try buying various styling products with pomade, gel and cocoa butter in it for conditioning and manageability.

I like my hair straight because it's long, and is hard to manage if I don't keep up with it. I don't get too many perms, but at least five times a year. But to each is own. Not all black girls like their hair straight, they like it short, or are satisfied with wigs and hair pieces.

I don't think it's silly, it's a fashion thing, I have straight hair and I still straighten it lol, it just goes a bit kinky sometimes. White people go and get a tan, that's silly because sunbeds do so much damage to your skin. Everybody does things to their hair, people always try new styles or make it curly. The affro is nice too. But at the end of the day it's just hair, it doesn't bother me.

I think you should be comfortable doing what ever you want to your hair.. Your hair is an extension of you and you should do with it whatever makes you happy.

Buy a hair relaxer at your local drug store for black hair. I think that if you keep it kind of short that it looks fine and keep it clean.

I think straightening it is cool. It looks more polished. The wigs are good if it is a nice one and not just some cheap one. It has to really fit and suit your face shape.

It depends on the person. As far as hair goes, it doesn't really matter what race you are for straightening or curling your hair. Some people look good with it, some look silly. Straight or curly, the one thing that I honestly think is that it's really weird when African Americans have bleach blonde hair. Same with the Japanese (I think they call them something with a G? I can't remember.) who try to look like they're California girls or something by using tanning stuff that makes their skin look orange, and having bleach blonde hair. It creeps me out.

I'm so used to seeing weaves these days that I am surprised when I see someone with their natural hair! Some people look great with it natural, especially wheb they have the personality to match and others look good with a weave. I am a white chick in NZ ans I have the same kind of kink to my hair, not that natural beautiful ringlet curl but it kinks, often stangely. I used to hate it and always want it straightened but at 27 I'm finally comfortable with it. It does seem silly sometimes for these beautiful women to be hiding their hair under an unnatural looking wig but each to their own. As long as you feel comfortable and happy with yourself, others opinions do not matter. Happy New Year.

I think that it's personal choice, but if they straigthen it thinking that white type hair or straight hair is the only beautiful hair, they are being prejudice against themselves.

I've seen beautiful nappy hair and ugly nappy hair. My friend in high school, who is black, she used a touch of real olive oil rubbed in her hands and them into her hair, her hair was soft and beautiful, but still had a very tight curl. I used Infusium 23 in my friends four girls hair and it made their nappy hair manageable and beautiful, but not straight.

I find it sad that everyone wants to look exactly a like, have straight hair, be a size 2, be white or at least light skined, etc.,

If our Father in Heaven and Jesus wanted us to look alike, they easily could have made us all look basically a like and wouldn't that have been boring.

I have fly away hair, it changes colors all the time without dying it and it's basically straight and won't perm anymore. I use to like a medium perm, because it gave me body and I could do more with it. I've come to accept it's basically pony tail hair and I don't worry about it. It is what it is.

Chose the how your hair is based upon what you like, not what the world likes or you are going to have to change your hair every few months to keep up with social whims.

well iam not an afriacan american but my mom has straight hair and my dad has curly hair my sister has straight hair and i have my dads curly hair its not that bad it sorta wavy sorta curly when i was young it pissed me off but now it doesn't bother me any more because its who iam and i can't change who i am no matter what i do. and as for African Americans i don't think it silly to straighten their hair but i think the wig thing is abit too much. plus beauty is never wrong, silly or stupid

I am a fourth black, but I don't have the African stereotypical hair... I did when I was little. Now I have more Caucasian hair.

I don't know...sometimes straightened Afro American hair can look really awful...but othertimes great.. I think it really depends on how much effort ( and possibly money) is put into it. I don't think that there is anything wrong with kinky hair in the first place...and straightening it is just a form of fashion..And to my way of thinking fashion was always meant to be fun. I'm blond...but I've been known to highlight my hair even blonder..same thing:)

I think anything that isn't too over-the-edge is fine. As long as you're happy with it. I know I have done a whole lot to my hair; all different styles, all different colors! As long as it fits who you are and fits your personality a person can make almost anything work.
