What do you think about black men and dreadlocks?

My boyfriend has dreadlocks and they are approximately 15 to 18 inches long. He use to maintain them very well. Lately he stopped twisting the new growth and they have started to look very messy. He washes his hair often, and they don't stink. However he doesn't look neat anymore. He has made a vow to never cut his hair again. I asked him if he would make them look neater, or even consider cutting them off because he would look so much neater. He said that if he cuts them off, then we would not be together. I really don't know if I can deal with them any longer. It has gotten to the point that I am embarrassed to be around him. He used to wear his hair in a ponytail but now he stopped doing that.... he wears them loose. All of that new growth in his hair and loose, really makes him look unkept. He has even stopped shaving. His face is getting full of nappy hair. What should I do. He seems to be set in his decision of not grooming himself.

locs are beautiful when they are well kept, what he is doing is not attractive...i reallly do not like messy locs it just seems so unkept and unattractive. why isn't he trying to maintain them? keeping them looking nice has nothing to do with him cutting his hair. maybe you should offer retwisting them for him.

I don't think it's about grooming, he still washes, and that's what's important. If you can't be with him because of how he looks, then try to gather all the reasons in his personality as to why you like him. Maybe you like his rebelliousness, and with that will come the rejection of mainstream appearance. I think it is more about you and what you are willing to accept, because it isn't right to ask someone else to change for you.

i think it looks hot! although, in the future if he keeps doing that, he'll grow bald faster.

Sounds like you're dating a true Rasta, I don't think they groom at all. If this is true, asking him to cut his hair is totally against his belief system.

i see a few things here -

i think locks look ok if well kept and presentable...this sounds like they aren't anymore - the other thing i see with this is you say that he was well kept, and now all of a sudden he is not 'keeping' himself like he did - so, what is going on with him ?

just remember you can't change anyone! :)

I would ask him for his changes? If he is that offensive then break up with him and find someone who is neater in your eyes!
